How to Apply the Latest Brain Research to Double your Chunking Skills (90 min)

There has been a recent surge in research findings about the brain, from the physical changes that result from using the internet and modern technology (e.g., mobile devices), to the effect of "brain exercises" on working memory and processing speed. This presentation will summarize brain research findings that are relevant to real-time transcribing, and provide detailed strategies to apply that research to dramatically improve the ease, speed, and quality of real-time chunking.

Live Well, Stay Well, and TypeWell: sustaining health, preventing injury and upgrading ergonomics (45 min)

Preventative measures can help you protect against injury and stress resulting from prolonged transcribing, whether you work remotely (from a home or workplace office) or on-site (in a classroom setting). Learn about on-the-job practices to sustain and improve health that you can implement right away—mostly without the use of special equipment. We'll review ergonomics and equipment, including the increasingly popular sit/stand workstation, seating, external monitors, laptop docks, and keyboarding options. Participants will try out different keyboards and a foot pedal, and will take away resources for further inquiry.

Expanding the Populations Served by TypeWell: Oregon State University and International Students (45 min)

Maximizing the Meaning of Multimedia: Reader-friendly strategies for your next encounter with on-screen presentation (45 min)

Nearly every transcriber has provided TypeWell services for a class or meeting incorporating PowerPoint, Prezi, or a similar multimedia presentation. These formats can improve communication access by visually displaying what might otherwise solely be aural information, orienting the audience to the structure of the discussion and confirming proper spelling of new terminology. However, they often exclude some participants and place additional demands on transcribers, reducing the effectiveness of transcription. Participants will play both the part of reader and transcriber and will have a chance to self-evaluate. We'll provide concrete strategies and hands-on skill practice to help you transcribe more effectively during multimedia presentations.

To navigate a smooth transition into the classroom, you need to develop a good relationship between the transcriber and instructor. Site policies usually dictate how, when, and what should be communicated with the instructor prior to the first day of class, and who should communicate that information. We'll share templates for emails and/or letters to send to instructors, and the Top 10 “lines” a transcriber can use to answer questions without breaking confidentiality. Fun role-playing scenarios will help participants practice how to handle difficult or uncomfortable situations.

Disability Coordinators and Service Providers - A Love Story (45 min)

Disability Coordinators and Service Providers have a complicated relationship. Providers are understandably focused on the services they provide, interactions with teachers and students, and on making a living at what they do. Disability Coordinators have an array of responsibilities and expectations to meet, services to coordinate, and people to answer to. Sometimes, providers do not have a clear understanding of how disability services function and may feel that policies or procedures that are required of them are overbearing and needless. This understandably leads to conflict and frustration for both the coordinator and the service provider.
The purpose of this workshop is to provide participants with a more clear understanding of how they can create a win-win situation. We will discuss the intention of disability service accommodations, how disability services function and how to facilitate a supportive, inspiring work environment and operate as an ally to your coordinator.
